Homework - Sketchbooks, New themes!

Each week pick one theme for homework & tick it off.
You must use the whole page and fill it with drawings & notes /information /ideas -
describe what your looking at!
If you draw from your imagination one week,
you MUST draw an object in front of you the following week.

Example:
Week 1: “Design a postcard” -
I draw the sea and the beach from my imagination/images on my phone.

Week 2: “Tools”
I draw tools in front of me, I get a hammer and a wrench, I draw everything I can see and investigate the objects.

Your homework is only once a week & should last a MINIMUM of 30 minutes. You must :
  1. Label the homework title
  2. Create a tonal grid
  3. Use the whole page & write notes
  4. Tone, Shade & Blend!!!!!!
  5. If possible use colour (& shade).
  6. Put effort in!

If homework does not have shading/or not complete with the best effort it will not be accepted.
Students will be asked to complete it again.

Pinterest! - Inspiration

Pinterest is a great site to discover artwork, gather ideas and get inspired!

Pinterest shows how other creative thinkers are expressing themselves.
There is lots of collage, drawing on unusual materials, sticking pieces together - lots of things that could be done in the art-room!

Below is my account with 'boards' which are
similar to albums holding lots of images!

Here is also another board with great inspiration :

6th YR LCA

6th Yr LCA

As part of their task
students hand crafted christmas decorations
& sold them to raise money for a childrens charity.

The students created very beautiful
& successfully sold decorations!

Here are some images of their process & finished pieces!

1st Year - Squish Face

Student Material Exploration : Chalk Pastel.
Artist - Pastels - Degas & Mags.
Artist - Texture: Van Gogh.

After the students trialed the markings and textures of
chalk pastel they could begin their project!

(Step by step markings/technique for students who were out below)

1. Using the gridding technique students gridded up the photocopy of their squished face!

2. They then gridded up the black sugar paper.

The students then mapped out of the photo copy where the dark to light areas are,
(similar to the tonal scales that we have explored previously)
  • Black
  • Dark
  • Medium
  •  Gray
  •  Light

(some students used variations of these words/terms of dark - to light)

*Some students were absent for this lesson and used tracing paper to catch up on this process*

Not all students are finished but
Here are 4 finished pieces of work!
Students that finished early extended their portrait by adding background details of their choice!

1st & 2nd YR Homework - Sketchbooks

1st & 2nd Year Homework

Each week students are asked to create one piece
of homework from a list of themes in their sketchbook.
They then base their homework on that theme.

There are only two rules:
Rule 1:
Your drawing must be labelled (the name of the theme).

Rule 2:
If you have drawn something from your imagination one week, the following week you must draw objects/something in front of you.

Example : Week 1 : Theme: School
- You create a drawing of your pencil case & pens that are infront of you, you try get all the details you see using shading & blending.

Week 2: Theme : Something Shiny
- You create an imagined drawing of the moon & and a shooting stars - still you add detail, shading & blending.

Drawing things from your imagination and from infront of you (observational drawing) are both very important skills in art, we need to keep both of them improving!

Here are some examples of two students sketchbooks:

These two students draw mainly
from observation (things infront of them)

Squish Face - 1st YR Tone & Chalk Exploration

In class we have explored Tone through pencil & colour pencil.
We then explored Tone through Chalk Pastels!  πŸ–
We looked at a very famous artist who uses Chalk Pastel - Degas.
We also looked at contemporary artist who uses pastels - Mags Williamson

In class we exerimented with two different colours of pastels! We followed the list below trying out each technique.  πŸ– 1. Blending (two colours together)  πŸ– 2. Little Strokes πŸ– 3 Hatching & Cross Hatching (lines in one direction. Lines in two directions over lapping)  πŸ– 4. Side Strokes (putting the pastel on the long flat side) πŸ– 5. Layered Side Strokes (putting stroke after stroke on top of each other)  πŸ– 6. Feathering (similar to hatching but  may overlap in any direction) πŸ– 7. Twist (lay chalk on its side and twist it with your fingers) πŸ– 8. Pointilism. (lots small dots/marks ) πŸ– 9. Drawing (using it like a pencil/pen)

1st Year - Sketchbooks (catch-up). πŸŽ¨πŸ–πŸ–Œ

πŸ–Œ 1st Year - Sketchbooks πŸ–

In our sketchbooks we explored our Art Elements & Design Principles (A.E.D.P),
we then started to learn new keywords as we moved along such as primary sources.

Here are some important work that needs to be in your sketchbook!! πŸŽ¨πŸ“–

1. Dot - imagination drawing. Homework - draw 2 leaves using dots & lines.
2. Line - types of lines.
3. Lines & patterns - drawing of hand with sections in pattern.
4. Lines & Shapes - observational drawing - cup.
5. Lines & grids - Michael Craig Martin inspired.
6. Tone - Tone letters & shape shading.
7. Monochrome & Observational Drawing.

Below are images students work to help you catch up on what you have missed!

πŸ–Œ  - This means write this keyword and defintion at the bottom or top of your page.
πŸ– - This means this is your task/what you have to do.

1. Art Elements!

We explored Dot first by looking at artists who use dots in their work.
We looked at : Roy Lichtenstein, George Seurat (both use very small dots)
Yayoi Kusama - a Japanese artist who is still alive & working today!

πŸ–Created a drawing from your imagination using dots!
πŸ–ŒKeyword: "A dot is a round mark made by a pointed tool"
Here are examples of two students work - use colour if you would like to.

* Homework was then to draw two leaves for homework using line & dots

2. Line -
πŸ–Draw out these types of lines!
πŸ–Œ Keyword: Line " A line is a dot that went for a walk"

 3.  Lines & Pattern πŸ–ŒKeyword : "A pattern is a repeated decorative design."πŸ–Step 1: Measure out 8 boxes using a rulerπŸ–Step 2: Trace around your hand in the middle of the pageπŸ–Step 3: Create different lines in each section, use colour too!

4. Lines & Shape

Artists we looked at Kandinsky & Michael Craig-Martin

πŸ–ŒKeyword Shape: " When a line bends, a shape begins! A shape is a closed line.

πŸ– Create an observational drawing of a cup using line and decorate using shapes & patterns.

5.Lines & Grids.
In class we began to done some research on 'stuff' - we discussed we things we used every day, and think very little about. We used the artists Michael Craig Martins (MCM) work 'Sharpener' and we learned how to grid using numeracy.

πŸ– Step 1. Measure equally 3 boxes down and 3 across using a pencil.
πŸ–Step 2. On coloured sugar paper repeat and measure equally 3 boxes down + 3across
πŸ–Step 3. One box at a time draw in the sharpener lines into the box on your colour paper.
πŸ–Step 4. After using a pencil go over your finished lines with a marker.

 6. Tone - Letters & Shape shading

πŸ–ŒKeyword "Tone is shades in light & dark."
(Tonal Drawing Exercise) Use the images above for help.
πŸ–1. Tonal Grid - this is shading light to dark (changing the pressure on your pencil)
πŸ–2. Apply shading, showing tone to the shapes to show form. (make them look 3D)
(TONES) Use the images above for help.
πŸ–1. Write the word Tones 4 times in big bubble/block writing filling up your page.
πŸ–2. T being the Lightest and S being the darked begin to shade light to dark
Tones 1 - Shading just using a normal pencil
Tones 2 - Shading using 1 coloured pencil
Tones 3 - Shading using Dots (the closer the dots are the darker the area)
Tones 4 - Shading using Lines (the closer the lines are the darker the area)

7. Monochrome & Observational Drawing.

πŸ–ŒKeyword- "Monochromatic - containing or using only one colour in various tones"
πŸ– Create a drawing of a primary source object (an object in front of you) using monochrome! You can use pencil or coloured pencil. Dont forget to do your tonal grid!!
